Floral Frocks

Print and dye details

A synthetic nylon late 1950’s dress that has been screen-printed in 9 colours.

The dress has been made up going against the grain but the design is multi directional and can take this unsual method of making.
By making up in this way, the designer had a larger repeat to work from than the usual method; they could use the repeat that covered the full width of the fabric rather than the down repeat of the design along the length of the fabric which is nearly always shorter.

The print paste dyes have penetrated well from the front to the back of the fabric. All of the colours seem to have similar penetration of the fabric allowing for a very even looking designed surface to the fabric print.

9 colours on a white ground, 2 grey, almost black, 2 pinks, 2 red, 2 green.
